The Shipping and Port Control (Works) Regulation (Cap 313 X) and the Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels)(Works) Regulation (Cap 548 I) have come into force since 2-January-2007. All persons employed who will carry out works on board the vessel in the waters of Hong Kong should hold valid certificates in respect of the relevant safety training courses.
The requirements of mandatory safety trainings under the above Regulations are to ensure that any persons engaged in the works, such as shipboard cargo handling, ship-repairing and ship-breaking, and marine construction, on board a ship in the waters of Hong Kong have received relevant safety trainings.
Mandatory safety training courses include:-

Shipboard Cargo Handling Basic Training
For any person employed who will engage in shipboard cargo handling activities, he should hold the valid certificate of the "Shipboard Cargo Handling Basic Training Course" .

Works Supervisor Safety Training
For any vessel in the waters of Hong Kong engaging works on board, the person in charge of works and employer should appoint at least one works supervisor. The works supervisor should hold the valid certificate of any of the following courses relevant to the trade of the works he will engage.
- "Works Supervisor Safety Training Course (Cargo Handling)";
- "Works Supervisor Safety Training Course (Ship-repairing and Ship-breaking)";
- "Works Supervisor Safety Training Course (Marine Construction)"

Shipboard Crane Operator Safety Training
For any crane operator who will operate shipboard crane, he should hold the certificate of the "Shipboard Crane Operator Safety Training Course"
