Updated Vessel Safety Standards / Codes of Practice
- Under the Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) Ordinance, Cap. 548, four sets of codes of practices, i.e. " Code of Practice - Safety Standards for Classes I Vessels" , " Code of Practice - Safety Standards for Classes II Vessels" , " Code of Practice - Safety Standards for Classes III Vessels" and " Code of Practice - Safety Standards for Class IV Vessels" have been issued.
- These approved codes are for the purpose of providing practical guidance in respect of the construction, installation and equipment safety, maintenance and operation safety of local vessels under the Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) (Safety and Survey) Regulation, Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) (Certification and Licensing) Regulation and Merchant Shipping (Local Vessels) (General) Regulation. These codes may be inspected at or obtained from Local Vessels Safety Section, Marine Department, 23rd Floor, Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central, Hong Kong (Telephone No.: 2852 4444 ), or from Marine Department web-page at : http://www.mardep.gov.hk.
- The afore-mentioned Codes of Practice have been widely consulted and commented/endorsed by members of PLVAC or its Sub-committees or Working Groups at previous meetings or circulations to ensure their practicability and acceptability in practice. Contents in these codes may be revised or amended from time to time and will also be notified in gazette.
Approved Safety Equipment
Safety equipment for use on board local vessels should be of approved types either approved by the maritime administrations of a convention country or classification society or otherwise accepted by the Director.
